Surabhi Sarva Shiksha Evam Kalyan Samiti (SEVAKS) has a long-standing commitment to educational innovation, particularly in making learning engaging and accessible for children. In collaboration with the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), SEVAKS developed a series of educational comics aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 14. This initiative was part of an effort to raise awareness about critical environmental issues in an age-appropriate and engaging manner.
The project involved preparing of comics and their field-testing with the prime objective to create awareness and promote an understanding specifically among the children that WATER and particularly fresh water sources are scarce and that there is a need to safeguard and conserve our natural resources and environment.
The comics with a storyline based on real success stories of people who have overcome water related problems through community leadership, innovativeness and enterprise while adopting a scientific methodology, a set of characters were developed that children could relate to, such that they set an example for the children who read these comics.
The dialogue delivery is in simple Hindi.
Apart from the comic strips the comics also have an interactive element in the form of questions that the target group could respond to at leisure against the possibility of winning a prize and with added incentive of early bird prizes.
The final deliverables were printed comics, soft copies of comics on CD and a report on the findings.
1. To create awareness among the children about the need to conserve fresh water resources.
2. To test the children on their existing knowledge on environmental issues, and specifically on fresh-water sources & resources.
3. To propagate a scientific attitude among the youth of the country vis-à-vis conservation of our natural resources, particularly water resources.
1. Water & Sanitation:
Objective: To educate children about the importance of water conservation and the practices of proper sanitation.
Content: This comic introduces young readers to the significance of water as a precious resource. It covers various topics including the water cycle, sources of clean water, the impact of water scarcity, and methods to conserve water at home and in their communities.
Sanitation: The comic also emphasizes the importance of hygiene and sanitation, teaching children about the benefits of clean drinking water, proper disposal of waste, and the prevention of waterborne diseases.
Characters and Storyline: Through relatable characters and engaging storylines, children learn how their actions can impact water availability and cleanliness. The stories are designed to be both educational and entertaining, ensuring that the key messages are effectively communicated.
2. Deforestation & Water Conservation:
Objective: To highlight the interconnectedness of deforestation and water conservation, and to promote environmental stewardship among children.
Content: This comic explains the causes and consequences of deforestation, including its impact on wildlife, the environment, and particularly on water resources. It discusses how trees and forests play a crucial role in maintaining the water cycle and preventing soil erosion.
Water Conservation: The narrative extends to the role of forests in conserving water, maintaining groundwater levels, and preventing floods and droughts. The comic provides practical tips for children on how they can contribute to reforestation efforts and water conservation in their daily lives.
Characters and Storyline: The characters in this comic navigate challenges related to deforestation and water scarcity, learning valuable lessons about conservation and the importance of protecting natural resources. The stories are crafted to inspire a sense of responsibility and proactive behavior in young readers.
Target Audience: The comics are specifically designed for children aged 8 to 14, a crucial age group for instilling lifelong habits and values.
Interactive Learning: By using the comic format, SEVAKS ensures that the information is presented in a visually appealing and engaging way, making it easier for children to absorb and retain the knowledge.
Practical Lessons: Each comic includes practical lessons and activities that children can undertake to practice what they have learned, such as water-saving techniques and simple reforestation projects.
